Lodges offer solid, hotel-style comfort, but a private tented camp gives you something a permanent building can't: a genuine sense of being inside the landscape, with only canvas between you and the plains at night.
Tented camps also tend to be smaller, often ten to twenty tents compared to a lodge's fifty or more rooms, which usually means a quieter, more personal stay with staff who get to know guests by name.
Location is another factor. Because tents are lighter to build, camps can often sit in more remote, less developed areas closer to wildlife corridors, while larger lodges are frequently built near more accessible, busier parts of the park.
Neither option is objectively better, a lodge suits travelers who want more structure and amenities, while a tented camp suits those who want the trip itself to feel like part of the wilderness rather than a stop beside it.
